Jennifer Penn

REGISTERED NURSE · WRITER

Clinical experience. Lived understanding. Care for the whole person.

I’m Jennifer Penn, a registered nurse and writer. My nursing background spans hospital medical-surgical and observation units, an inpatient burn and wound unit, and home health. Working across these settings has given me experience caring for people through acute illness, complex wounds, recovery, and the transition back to everyday life.

At the bedside and in people’s homes, I’ve learned to pay attention to more than a diagnosis: the person’s concerns, daily routines, support system, and ability to understand and carry out their care. That perspective shapes the practical nursing care and education I offer through Essential Presence.

My interest in repeating patterns also grew through my own life—motherhood, demanding work, periods of change, and the practice of noticing my responses as they happen. Nursing gave me a foundation in the body and illness. Personal reflection and ongoing independent study of consciousness, embodiment, nervous-system awareness, and symbolism gave me other ways to ask how past experiences can continue to influence the present.

Beyond the Pattern is the evolving framework I’m developing from that inquiry. It brings lived observation into conversation with what we know about the body, inviting us to notice familiar reactions, examine the meaning we give them, and make more conscious choices.

Essential Presence is where these strands meet: skilled nursing for practical care, reflective education for greater awareness, and writing that gives lived experience a voice. My aim is to help people feel seen, informed, and more able to participate in their care and their lives.

BEYOND THE PATTERN

Your body can hold what your mind
thinks you’ve already moved past.

Essential Presence explores how the past remains active within the body, how unconscious patterns repeat through the present, and how those patterns quietly shape the future.

Through consciousness, embodiment, nervous-system awareness, symbolism, and lived observation, we uncover the hidden architecture beneath repeating experiences.

We look at how physical sensations, thoughts, relationships, and beliefs can become tangled together in familiar experiences.

Bringing those patterns into awareness creates room to reflect on what is happening and choose a different next step.

We are not escaping the body to reach higher consciousness. We are bringing consciousness fully into the body—where the past can be witnessed, the present reclaimed, and the future reorganized.

Observe the pattern. Reclaim the present. Embody a different future.

WAYS INTO THE FRAMEWORK

Different lenses. A shared inquiry.

Begin with what you notice in your life, then explore the lenses that help you reflect on it.

The body & lived patterns

Embodiment, nervous-system awareness, and lived observation invite attention to sensations, reactions, and repeating experiences.

Reflection: What do I notice in my body when this familiar situation returns?

Consciousness & the observer

Consciousness and self-observation create room to notice a thought, belief, or response before deciding what to do next.

Reflection: What am I assuming, and what other response is available?
